Organizational Renewal

When working with organizations that desire a renewal of energy, structure, or process, we recognize that it is equally important to work with the overall organization as well as the individual components of the organization, including the human component in order to achieve maximum impact.

We often utilize Participatory Action Research in which we work with the individuals in the system to collect and analyze information with the explicit purpose of taking action and making change. Within this approach we may invite people to provide data and to work with them on the change process through a variety of consultant guided and self guided assessments, including interviews, surveys, and group assessments through focus groups and whole system meetings.

Based on the information collected during the data collection phase of a project, we custom design a work plan designed to assist the organization in creating an environment that is highly productive, creative, participative, efficient, and energetic. We work closely with the client team and design processes that allow for join-in from all levels of the organization from the beginning of the change process. The participative processes that we use, including Whole Person Process Facilitation and World Café, and Open Space Technology, engage the people who are affected by change in a process of determining what is needed to respond to their situation, identify responsible and committed leaders/champions inside the organization and get their commitment to action plans.

As the organization begins to implement its change process, we work with the client team to create performance measures and track the progress in terms of tangible goals. This process allows us to easily recognize the goals that are being achieved, and to work with the client team to assist them in recognizing and removing any barriers that exist in implementing the change and ensure changes are facilitated as smoothly and quickly as possible.

One of the major challenges in implementing change processes is not “What” to do but lack of understanding and skills in “how” to work with the people process. Much of our support to our clients is the “how”. An important feature of the methodologies we work with is that they support the transfer of learning about the “how” so that capacity for working with change increases as leaders and team members participate in the organizational development and change processes with us.

We recommend that the leaders involved in the client team consider including an individual coaching component within the organizational renewal process. This individual time allows leaders the opportunity to focus on their own role within the change process, ensuring that they are offering the best of themselves out into the organization as they lead the change process.
